| Edmonton Oilers Information |
The Edmonton Oilers is a professional ice hockey team, which is based in Edmonton of Alberta in Canada. They have been playing as the members of the Western Conference for the National Hockey League (NHL). The Oilers have a history of winning the Stanley Cup at for five times like, in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990.
According to the history of the team, it was formed in the year of 1972, as an introduction of twelve new franchises of the major professional World Hockey Association (WHA). The team was renamed as the Alberta Oilers, due to the shift of another founding team named Calgary Broncos, was shifted from Alberta to Cleveland of Ohio state. The team was renamed for a second time to the original one as to the name Edmonton Oilers, in the very same year. The Oilers had joined the NHL in the year of 1979. The Oilers had proved to be very strong and dominant team of the 1980s, as it had achieved the most recent "dynasty" status, being honored by the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. Along with five Stanley Cups, it has also won over six conference titles in a 21-team league over seven years. It is interesting to mention that the Oilers have a great rivalry with the Calgary Flames, which has a solid history for the relocation of the teams. The Oilers have also prepared to fight with their recently formed rivals named Vancouver Canucks.
The tewam had an origination in the year of 1971, and had seen the changes in name and place, due to financial reasons or to allow for a less complicated return of the WHA to Calgary. Oilers have always played their home games at Edmonton Gardens, and changed its name back to the Edmonton Oilers the following year. The team had begun their first year, by having the uniform in scripting “ALBERTA". It was placed along the backs of their jerseys. The founding owner of the team was Bill Hunter. Hunter had a record of having a junior hockey franchise called Edmonton Oil Kings. He was always busy in his effort to bring major professional hockey to Edmonton, by having an expansion NHL franchise. The credit for the choice of the name "Oilers" for the new WHA franchise goes to Hunter. The team had a great popularity with the fans right form the start. There were strong reasons, like having star players in the team like defenseman and team captain Al Hamilton, goaltender Dave Dryden, and forwards Blair MacDonald and Bill Flett.
The team had seen a real good improvement and change till the arrival of the year of 1978. It was a time, when new owner Peter Pocklington had traded, a real big aspiring superstar Wayne Gretzky as an under-age player, and a goaltender Eddie Mio and forward Peter Driscoll, from the Indianapolis Racers for a great amount of money. Gretzky's first and only WHA season, 1978–79, made the Oilers shoot to the top of the WHA standings, with a posting of a league-best of 48–30–2 record. But the Oilers could not make it to the championship, even after many regular season victories.
The Oilers had again saw an up rise in the 1983-84 season, as it had earned a franchise-record 57 wins and 119 points, which is still the best record in the league matches. It had also scored an un-unmatched NHL record of 446 goals. They earned a rematch with the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Finals. They had won the opening game in Long Island by a score of 1–0, and were pounded 6–1 in the next game. Mark Messier, a former All-Star left wing switched to center late in the season in an inspired move by Sather, emerged from Gretzky's shadow with a dominating Finals performance that earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The team had seen a repetition of success in the Stanley Cup champions of 1985. The Gretzky trade had opened up a chapter in the increase in the rate and the salaries of the NHL players. It is also a reality that small-market teams like Edmonton simply could not compete with salaries offered by larger-market teams, mainly in the United States.
